Open models are transforming the way we create, share, and innovate. From software and education to industrial design, science, art, and culture, these collaborative frameworks challenge traditional systems and inspire new ways of solving problems. Communities of makers, developers, and researchers often succeed where centralized organizations struggle, driving progress through openness and cooperation.
Projects such as Tabby, the open-source kit car; Protei, the open-source marine drone; and OpenStreetMap are just a few examples of this shift. But what can these models teach us? Under what conditions can they maximize their impact? And how can they coexist or collaborate with more conventional actors?
This editorial project reimagines and contextualizes five key texts from the Open Models book, already freely available online, transforming them into a tactile and customizable reading experience. Designed as an “open edition,” the format allows readers to add or remove leaflets, explore thematic vocabulary lists, follow chronological or geographical timelines of major projects, and dive into biographical insights about the pioneers of open source.
The aim is to spark curiosity, encourage independent exploration, and invite readers to analyze these models through multiple lenses, technological, cultural, and societal. By blending editorial design with interactive learning, Open Models becomes both a reference and a tool for anyone interested in the future of open innovation.
