A personalized, immersive experience to support patients with age-related macular degeneration

As ophthalmology clinics face increasing patient volumes and shorter consultation times, the need for patient education and therapeutic support is growing. In response, Bayer France launched an innovative educational initiative to support individuals living with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a chronic eye condition requiring injections every 2 to 3 months and long-term management. Building on its forward-looking initiative La Clinique du futur, Bayer introduced an immersive micro-space, the e-bulle: a compact, futuristic pod designed by Leet Design, featuring a 23-inch touchscreen, speakers, and an integrated reclining seat. The goal? To transform waiting time into learning time, offering AMD patients a calm and informative experience before their consultation.

A complete mission: from content strategy to visual design

My role was to design and produce a fully integrated educational platform within the e-bulle, based on a series of four motion design video modules, gathered under the name Clin d’œil (« A Wink »). Each short video (2 to 7 minutes), followed by a tailored quiz, helps patients:

  • Understand how AMD affects the eye and its different types, symptoms, and diagnostic steps,

  • Learn about current treatments and their role in slowing the disease,

  • Explore future research and promising innovations,

  • Gain practical advice for living with AMD day-to-day.

The quiz results help doctors adapt their explanations during the consultation based on what the patient has understood, creating a more inclusive, patient-centered approach, especially suited for older audiences.

A collaborative, multi-expert approach

This project brought together a rich ecosystem of collaborators: ophthalmologists, medical writers, regulatory experts, the patient advocacy group Retina France, as well as motion and sound designers. I led and coordinated the entire creative process:

  • Co-design workshops with clinicians to identify key educational gaps,

  • Content scoping and scriptwriting in collaboration with medical writer Céline Seigneur,

  • Scientific referencing (textual and visual) with Céline Seigneur, along with direct exchanges with clinicians (and regulatory team) to validate the accuracy and appropriate level of detail.

  • Graphic identity and art direction I designed specifically for visually impaired users,

  • Storyboarding and art creation for each scene in line with flat design principles,

  • Production oversight in collaboration with Criss Cross animation studio,

  • Custom audio identity developed with a sound designer, Suhrud Banhatti, for a fully immersive experience,

  • UX and interface design of the e-bulle platform, in collaboration with development studio The Walking Nerd.

Every step was validated by healthcare professionals, Bayer’s internal regulatory team, (and the last turn of validation was made by Retina France), ensuring the scientific accuracy, pedagogical clarity, and accessibility of the final product.

Beyond the pod: hybrid deployment for broader access

The e-bulle was installed and tested in three ophthalmology centers over several months. To extend its reach beyond the immersive pod, we developed complementary formats:

  • Take-home cards with QR codes allowing patients to access the content at home,

  • Video exports adapted for display on screens in waiting rooms.

This project exemplifies a key principle: better information leads to better care. With Clin d’œil, we delivered a practical, sensitive, and engaging tool that empowers patients to better understand their disease and speak more confidently with their care team.
