In March 1881, sculptor Marie Bashkirtseff wrote with poignant irony in La Citoyenne:
« We are asked with indulgent irony how many great female artists there were. Gentlemen, there have been, and it is surprising given the enormous difficulties they encountered. »
Throughout history, women in art have often been relegated to the roles of muses or shadow collaborators, confined by the “creature” stereotype. Their « femininity » was frequently used to exclude them from autonomous creation, preserving artistic privilege as a male domain. Despite these barriers, countless women artists persevered with courage and determination, producing significant work across eras and disciplines, often even more fervently when denied equal rights.
This project aims to unveil and honor these hidden women artists, recognizing that both halves of humanity have contributed to creation since time immemorial. It is vital to make visible the creators of the past, present, and those who continue to fiercely defend culture and the arts, shaping future generations’ understanding of social roles and creative expression.
For my DNSEP (Master’s degree), I designed an interactive, participative exhibition exploring women artists through six tangible and digital devices, bridging history, technology, and engagement to bring their stories to light.
